The first step toward finding a solution is to acknowledge that a problem exists. You must understand that adverse situations call for adverse strategies.

Every few decades, calamities hit humans and render man-made systems completely paralyzed. The worst effect of chaos such as war or pandemics is that it harms economies.

When economies collapse, consumption, production, and flow of money suffer. During these recessions, people lose their jobs and are pushed towards poverty.

The U.S has experienced the worst economic downturn due to the global pandemic and it happened faster too. Economist Koopman says that this recession depicts a war-like situation except for the weapons.

A total of 20.6 million jobs were lost in the U.S last year and the unemployment rate is as high as 14.7%. However, amid all this chaos, there is still hope of finding steady jobs and avoiding bankruptcy.

Here’s how you can still manage to stay in balance while the economy tilts close to a fall

1. Cut the Negativity out

It is a normal human reaction to stress out in uncertain situations, especially if one just lost their job. However, it’s a fact that stress leads to a lack of clarity and you won’t be able to solve your problems.

So acknowledge that you are in a sticky situation but also trust that you will get through it. Controlling your thoughts and programming your mind into thinking positive is the key.

Research has shown that self-affirmation allows you to find creative solutions to your problems. In stressful situations, it is advisable to navigate through them with positive thinking.

2. Find jobs in recession-proof industries

After you have calmed yourself a bit, the next logical step is to jobs that withstand all storms. You will need to look for jobs in companies in the following industries

  • Information technology
  • R&D
  • Educational institutions
  • Energy sector
  • Government organizations

These industries are also called “Growth Industries” and it is always a good idea to land a job in them. Even during tough times such as recession, these companies tend to remain stable.

In case you are worried that it is not you’re exactly your field, you should consider getting some relevant qualifications. Online education is a great option especially if you are currently jobless.

3. Talk to people you know

Studies show that one of the best strategies for finding good jobs is through personal contacts. The more connections you have, the easier it gets to avail yourself of opportunities.

The traditional ways of finding jobs through newspaper advertisements are not very efficient. Landing a job especially when the economy is in a recession can be tougher as jobs are scarce.

Do not hesitate to talk about what you are looking for in your friend circles. An even better option is to speak to your business contacts on social media.

Apps such as LinkedIn can also do a great deal for you, should the opportunity arise. A technical way to do this is to make a list of all these contacts.

Talk to them about your looking for a job one by one and maybe you will land a job interview. However, try not to waste your time on contacts that are “weak” in terms of job hunting.

So before applying, carefully go through the job description and see how you can add those to your resume. You can highlight the skills required and check to see what relevant experience you have related to it.

So you will need to alter your resume every time you send it to a company. This requires effort and time but it will save you from wasting a lot more time.

This is especially a good idea in terms of the work-from-home situation. The world is changing rapidly due to technology and even jobs are changing.

5. Freelancing

The pandemic has taught us that it is also possible to remain operational through devices and the internet. Freelancing is the rage in these times and a very good idea to put your skills to work.

So figuring out what skills you can offer to the freelancing market and work on that. You will need to make attractive profiles online for people to offer you work.

Websites such as Fiverr and Upwork are huge platforms where people can earn a decent income from home. The timings are flexible too and you can be your boss if it works out well for you.

The best way to cope in these tough times is to stay calm and look for solutions vigorously.
