Most of the biggest mistakes job seekers make are pretty easy to avoid – just pay close attention to them. Recruiters often notice the same mistakes in candidate behavior. These errors are things the HR team checks in the first place, to quickly eliminate weaker candidates. These mistakes make it easier for them to shortlist. Here are the most common mistakes recruiters see.

1. Too much information irrelevant to their curriculum vitae or cover letter:

If a recruiter doesn’t see the relevance of your application at a glance, they’ll quickly move on.

The solution: Focus on the facts that will interest employers. These include your titles, skills, experience, and accomplishments. Information about your personal life or your beliefs is generally irrelevant. Your CV and cover letter should be concise, focused, and relevant.

2. Spelling and grammar mistakes

When recruiters have many candidates to consider for a role, those who produced error-free applications will always have priority over those who made mistakes.

The solution: No mystery here, but it bears repeating: re-read yourself. A single typo in your CV could be enough to disqualify you. Go over your documents and have a friend proofread them for you.

3. Inadequate preparation:

Employers hate candidates who come for an interview with little or no knowledge of the company and what it does.

The solution: Do extensive research on the company before applying, and especially before the interview. Browse the website and read all recent articles about the potential employer. Use their information to make your application as relevant as possible. Match your application with the company’s mission, challenges, and culture. During the interview, ask smart questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the industry and the employer’s place in the market. (As opposed to basic questions that make it seem like you have no idea what you’re doing here.)

4. Dishonesty:

Recruiters find that a large number of candidates exaggerate or lie on their CVs. Many of these falsehoods are easily detected during a background check, and they immediately disqualify the candidate.

The solution: Be honest. It is never okay to overstate your education or experience. Your deception will likely discovered and you will lose all hope of landing the job. Instead, focus on the relevant skills and experience you have. If your experience doesn’t quite match the job description, write a cover letter that explains what you have to offer and how you might excel in this role. You don’t need to overdo it, anyway. In many cases, you only need around 50% of the requirements mentioned in the job posting to get an interview.

5. Doubtful online presence:

Employers will search for you on social media and Google. Any action and social media post that is not aligned with the company culture will hurt your chances.

The solution: Clean up your social profiles. Remove any content or photos that you don’t want an employer to see. Fix spelling and grammar mistakes, or negative messages about work or your former employers. Make sure your work or education information matches what you put on your resume. Any discrepancy could make employers suspicious.

6. Not being prepared for salary discussions:

If the application process goes well, you will need to discuss compensation with the employer at some point. Recruiters find it unprofessional for a candidate not to know how much they should paid (or to have unreasonable expectations.)

The solution: Don’t be the first to talk about salary. Let the employer bring it up. That said, prepared for the discussion when it takes place. Research compensation for similar roles; learn as much as you can about the company and its compensation policies. Mention a salary range that ends with a salary that is slightly higher than what you would like to receive – and say that you are ready to negotiate based on the job details and the benefits package.
